portraits of red and grey #2

by James Morehead

helsinki, finland

goodbye finnair
goodbye capitalism
goodbye five star hotel

we are walking towards an aeroflot jet
steep metallic steps lead into oval darkness
i am too tall
my head ducks
                          hair brushing the entrance
a stewardess greets us in russian
then english
then vanishes
we creep our way to assigned seats
they are cramped close my knees bunch up
my nostrils fill with the smell of russian soap
it is sickly strong and coats my lungs
i try not to breathe
our jet feels the runway
dropping beneath it
our fears our worries our thoughts of home
are emptied onto the pavement below
we are too far away now
school homework exams
lie scattered beneath us
                                       forgotten
