Summer Cyclist

by James Morehead

pounding heat
                       burning
                                    deeper

 my back
               arms
                        face

building layers of red

perspiration blinds
                              with stinging pain
wind-blown gravel
and lead-filled exhaust
announce a passing maverick

but the spinning wheels beneath me
                                                 gliding along boiling pavement
                                                 seem unaware of the sun

ahead

approaching oasis
a 7-11 on my right
turn skid stop

head spinning
                       tongue swollen
                                               a bottle of coke

i'm off again
