Balance (from an etching by William Blake)
by James Morehead
Below a blue-based, cloud-strewn sky,
a meandering river divides two lands.
One side,
a grassy plain and one tree,
holds grazing sheep,
and a young one that stands by her mother,
drinking a rich breakfast of fresh milk.
There is silence.
No wind to disturb them.
Across, unnoticed by the sheep,
a straw house sleeps,
unawakened by the morning air.
A silvery wood hides it
in a pocket of tranquility.
Distant mountains shadow the lake,
from which this balance flows.
